What makes a great leader?

Not everyone is a business is a leader in the formal sense of the word. However, everyone has the potential to exhibit leadership qualities and to contribute to the success of the company.

Evidently there are people in formal leadership roles, such as the CEO, managers, and team leaders. These individuals have the responsibility of setting the direction and strategy of the company, making important decisions, and guiding the organisation towards achieving its goals.

However, leadership is not limited to formal roles. Anyone in a business can exhibit leadership qualities, such as being decisive or being accountable for example. By demonstrating such leadership qualities, individuals can contribute to the success of the organisation and help create a positive and productive work environment.

So what makes a great leader? We think these are some of the key attributes and behaviours:

  • Vision: A great leader has a clear vision of what they want to achieve and can inspire others to work towards that vision.
  • Communication: A great leader is an excellent communicator, able to clearly articulate their vision and goals to their team and stakeholders.
  • Integrity: A great leader has a strong moral compass and leads by example. They are honest, transparent, and act with integrity.
  • Empathy: A great leader has the ability to understand and connect with the people they lead, and to consider their needs and perspectives.
  • Decisiveness: A great leader is decisive, able to make tough decisions quickly and confidently.
  • Accountability: A great leader takes responsibility for their actions and the outcomes of their decisions.
  • Adaptability: A great leader is adaptable and able to respond to changing circumstances, adjusting their approach as needed.
  • Creativity: A great leader is innovative and can think outside the box to find new solutions to challenges.
  • Courage: A great leader is willing to take risks and make difficult decisions, even in the face of adversity.
  • Passion: A great leader is passionate about their work and inspires others to share that passion and enthusiasm.
So, while not everyone is a formal leader in a business, everyone has the potential to be a leader in their own way and to make a positive impact on the organisation.
